What order should you play KINGDOM HEARTS in?

The common advice is "just play it chronologically." For this series specifically, that is bad advice. Here is why, and what to do instead.

Why we don't recommend chronological order

The earliest events belong to χ[chi], then Birth by Sleep. Both were written for players who had already finished the first game.

BbS is the clearest case. It ends on a scene in which something takes up residence in a particular boy's heart. That ending lands only if you already know who that boy grows up to be. Play it first and it is a scene about a child whose name means nothing to you.

The χ titles push this further: the Keyblade War, the Foretellers and the Master of Masters all arrive with no setup from the main line. The series is built to reveal its past after the fact. Reorder it and the machinery stops working.

The three orders, compared

**Release order** — the order the story was published. Setup and payoff stay the distance apart the writers intended. Its weakness: 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep end up far from KH2, so the questions KH2 raises go unanswered for a long stretch.

**Chronological order** — the order events happen in-universe. Genuinely useful on a replay, or for someone who already knows each title and wants to see the shape of the whole. Not a first playthrough.

**Our recommended order** — release order as the spine, with 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep both moved to sit directly after KH2. This is the order the site presents by default.

The editorial reasoning behind our order

358/2 Days goes directly after KH2 because KH2's opening leaves you with questions about someone, and Days is the answer to all of them. Play it afterwards and it becomes the end of a story you already care about. Reverse the order and Days reads as a record of ordinary days whose ending means nothing to you yet.

Birth by Sleep goes after KH2 so that its final scene can do its work. It is a prequel on paper, but in practice it plays as a reckoning with everything up to KH2.

Nothing but those two is moved from release order, because nothing else needs to be.

What to do about the titles you can no longer play

χ[chi], Unchained χ, Union χ[Cross] and Dark Road have all been shut down. You cannot play the originals today.

For Union χ[Cross] and Dark Road, the publisher provided an offline way to watch the story through. For the rest, cutscene compilations and summaries are what remain.

This site counts those as finishing the work. Nobody's spoiler settings are penalised for catching up by video. Withholding information because a game is no longer purchasable is not protection, just inconvenience.
