UNOFFICIAL FAN SITE

Characters

The people who matter to Sora's journey, grouped by the games they belong to and how they relate to one another.

Each entry comes in two parts. The first paragraph is safe wherever you are in the series. Below the rule it goes into the middle of a story, so if you still have games ahead of you, stop there.

Images are used under Square Enix's KINGDOM HEARTS video and image posting guidelines, for personal, non-commercial use, and come from the official game sites. All rights remain with their holders. Removal requests are honoured promptly.

The travelling party

06

The faces you travel with from the first game. Names and roles are open to everyone; only Riku and Kairi hold anything back, because what follows for them is the first game's plot.

Sora
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Sora

A boy from an island who ends up carrying the Keyblade — a weapon shaped like a key — and travelling between worlds. The series' protagonist.

Riku
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Riku

Sora's childhood friend, a year older, and far more curious about what lies beyond their island.

In the first game his wish to get out points somewhere very different from Sora's. Much of what follows is the series taking its time over how he comes to terms with his own choices.

Kairi
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Kairi

Childhood friend to Sora and Riku. She washed up on the island at some point, with no memory of what came before.

The missing memory is not background detail — it runs straight into the centre of the first game. Across the series she moves from the one who waits to the one who acts.

Donald Duck
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Donald Duck

Court magician at Disney Castle, out looking for a king who has gone missing. Short-tempered, and completely loyal.

Appears in:KINGDOM HEARTSKINGDOM HEARTS IIKINGDOM HEARTS IIIKINGDOM HEARTS IV
Goofy
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Goofy

Captain of the Disney Castle knights. He dislikes weapons that hurt people and fights with a shield. Easy-going, but often the one who calms an argument and names the thing nobody said.

Appears in:KINGDOM HEARTSKINGDOM HEARTS IIKINGDOM HEARTS IIIKINGDOM HEARTS IV
King Mickey
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

King Mickey

The king of Disney Castle, already gone when the story starts — where he went is one of the first questions the series asks.

Those who carry the Keyblade

07

The people who end up holding a Keyblade across the series.

Terra
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Terra

One of Birth by Sleep's three protagonists. The eldest, carrying both real strength and the difficulty of keeping hold of it.

His story runs on the way a determination to do right is exactly the opening someone else needs. Of the three, his ending is deferred the longest.

Appears in:Birth by SleepKINGDOM HEARTS III
Aqua
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Aqua

One of Birth by Sleep's three protagonists — the careful one, and the one who keeps worrying about the other two.

0.2 Birth by Sleep is a short piece devoted entirely to where she has been since. Whether you have played it changes how KH3's opening lands.

Appears in:Birth by Sleep0.2 Birth by SleepKINGDOM HEARTS III
Ventus
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Ventus

One of Birth by Sleep's three protagonists. The youngest, and the one with gaps in what he knows about his own past.

His history is where the series first sets out how it intends to handle memory and hearts. Whatever order you take Birth by Sleep's three stories in, they converge.

Appears in:Birth by SleepKINGDOM HEARTS III
Roxas
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Roxas

The protagonist of 358/2 Days, a member of a certain organisation working through his assignments. He also turns up at the start of KH2.

The hours KH2 spends on him at the start are not a detour — what he is gets revealed across them, deliberately slowly. Days retells that same period from the quiet side, between the missions.

Naminé
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Naminé

A girl in Chain of Memories, spending her time drawing in a certain castle.

What she can do works on memory, and the events of Chain of Memories rest entirely on it. Her name comes back every time the series returns to memory afterwards.

Axel / Lea
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Axel / Lea

A red-haired figure who fights with fire, forever telling people to commit his name to memory. Which side he is on depends on the game.

He changes sides more than almost anyone, and the reason sits in the relationships 358/2 Days spends its length on. The two names are that history, stated plainly.

Xion
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Xion

The fourteenth member to join the organisation in 358/2 Days. Working and living alongside Roxas and Axel, she starts to question what she is.

Xion. She works alongside Roxas in the same organisation, and the ordinary days Days spends its length on are the reason its ending works at all. Read as a summary, almost nothing of this game survives.

Seekers of darkness

05

The other side of the long conflict. The relationship between the names and who holds them keeps getting revised.

Master Xehanort
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Master Xehanort

An aged Keyblade Master, and the other side of the long conflict that spans the first half of the series.

His aim is laid out in Birth by Sleep and completed across Dream Drop Distance and KH3. Dark Road goes back to where he came from, following him from his younger years.

Ansem, Seeker of Darkness
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Ansem, Seeker of Darkness

The figure the first game builds toward. The name Ansem, and a set of research notes about darkness, are one of its spines.

The Ansem Reports the first game hands you carry a question about whose name that actually is. KH2 goes back and answers it directly.

Xemnas

Xemnas

The one leading the organisation in the black coats. KH2 deals with him head-on.

What the organisation is actually for is shown from different angles in Days, Chain of Memories and KH2. Take all three and you find the same plan told through different people.

Vanitas
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Vanitas

A masked figure in Birth by Sleep, turning up again and again across the three journeys.

When the mask comes off lands differently depending on which of Birth by Sleep's three stories you saved for last. What he is doubles as the game's explanation of how hearts work.

Appears in:Birth by SleepKINGDOM HEARTS III
Organization XIII
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Organization XIII

The group in the black coats. They first appear in Chain of Memories and stay involved from there on.

Each member has their own weapon and element, and Days shows the daily life of the thing from inside. Why thirteen specifically is something the later games come back and explain.

The older era

04

The people of the χ era, where the premises of the modern story were laid down.

Master of Masters
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Master of Masters

The figure who, in the far past, handed five apprentices their roles. His face is never out from under the hood.

The Book of Prophecies he wrote records the future, and the catastrophe in it happens as written. He sits at the origin of the current story — the arc KINGDOM HEARTS IV opens takes its name from the same word.

Appears in:χ[chi]χ Back CoverUnion χ[Cross]
Luxu
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Luxu

One of the Master of Masters' apprentices, given a role apart from the other five.

The role he was handed was designed to outlast his era. That single thread is the concrete join between the origin arc and the modern story.

Ephemer
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Ephemer

A boy from the χ era who falls in with the player character.

He is one of very few who acted on doubts about how their world actually worked. The back half of Union χ reads as the consequence of that question.

Appears in:χ[chi]Union χ[Cross]
Strelitzia
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Strelitzia

A Keyblade wielder in Union χ, searching for the player character to pass on a task.

She is at the centre of what happens in Union χ's later stretch, and the consequences carry into the present-day story. Her appearance in Quadratum in the KH4 footage follows from it.

From the Disney side

03

Characters from the Disney films who matter to the series as a whole.

Maleficent
©Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX

Maleficent

The witch from Sleeping Beauty. In this series she pursues aims of her own, and returns again and again.

In the first game she is the one holding the other Disney villains together. After that she stays on nobody's side, which makes her unusual — and at D23 2026 she was described as having a major role in KH4.

The meeting with Sora is Re Mind's secret episode. Where he is from and what he is for have not been stated. What the KH4 footage shows is kept separate from that here rather than merged into one account.

Music and Disney Worlds have a thread; this does not. Talk about characters is spoilers — one line saying how somebody ends up erases what this page spends its length withholding. It stays shut until comments can carry a disclosure scope of their own.
