Reference

The material an argument gets made out of, kept off the discussion page. A board and a shelf of sources stacked on one screen means whoever came for either scrolls past the other.

The Ansem Reports

In-fiction documents left as collectibles across the first game. The text is not here: in-game writing belongs to its rights holder, and we will not republish it, transcription or otherwise. What follows is the part a transcription does not give you.

What they are

Research notes on the Heartless, scattered as collectibles across the first game's worlds. Finishing the story does not get you all of them — they are something you go looking for. They are signed Ansem.

The set differs by edition

The original release and Final Mix do not contain the same set — Final Mix adds more. How the split actually falls is another matter: secondary sources disagree, and we found both 'nine plus four' and 'ten plus three' stated confidently. We are not adopting either number until it is checked against the games. For an exact list, go to the outside references below.

How to use them as evidence

If you are going to lean on these in an argument, they are a claim written by a character, not something the game depicts as fact. The distinction is why our theory articles label the kind of every source they cite.

Outside references

Sources that are not us, sorted by what kind of thing they are. Community references and transcriptions have not been checked by this site.

Theories discussed elsewhere

This was meant to be a roundup of what is being argued on Reddit and similar. It is empty, because the threads were not reachable from where this was assembled, and writing 'this is widely discussed' without being able to cite a thread is exactly the kind of claim this site refuses to make. Point us at specific threads and they go in, with sources and the date they were read.
